Since I was a small child I have been learning and thinking. I feel like I'm pretty well educated consdering that I have my master's in education BUT I know nothing of 21st Century teaching and learning. How is it a relatively young (28) teacher is still using the same traditional teaching practices that she was taught as a child? I starting to feel that the whole educational system needs an overhaul.
I attended my first webinar ever last Thursday. This amazes me considering I've even taken on-line classes which did not require me to attend a webinar. One of the first things our leader said was that I want you to start unlearning what you already know. Effectively, she wants us to start altering our schemas. At first, I was confused but on further thought I realized that she is right. We need to start unlearning what best practices will be. I'm starting to feel that my role as a teacher should be moving from expert to faciliator. One who encourages wonderings and learning for their students instead of telling them what they need to know for third grade.
So what is it that you need to unlearn?
